We have point cordinates, how can we bulid map from txt file

Postby plavadinho » Tue Sep 21, 2010 2:48 pm

Dear All,

We have created points by using a txt file with x y coordinates in order to create such points in the map.

My question is: is it possible to conect automaticaly the points (that have their own order) to create a polygon?

In alternative is it possible to see as a label the point numeration to create the polygon manually?

Thank you and best regards,

Do this little tutorial, please, and I promise: everything will be clear!

If you have a txt file in this format:
ID -> x -> y
1 ->(number) ->(number)
2 ->(number) ->(number)

Image

:arrow: If you have space delimited file, please use NotePad++ or Excel to convert it tabulator delimited file.
This file called i.e: "points.txt".

Start Explorer, set up desired projection (Be sure the point coordinates are in this projecion) - Open points.txt with add layer button on the layers panel.
(This is the 2nd button, select txt files filter on file open panel).
You will see the points layer, but won't see map.

Click the 6th icon on the top of layer window - called Source.
New window appears.
Set up the x and the y position field (Easting/Northing as you call), and click OK.
You will see the point map.

(Next is not necessary, but recommanded step:
Select the 4th icon on the top of tehe layer window - called: Save layer as...
Save in DigiTerra Map/Tab or ESRI SHP format, or what you wish. File called i.e: point-map.shp
Delete the unnecessary points.txt layer, add the new, normal map layer: point-map.shp)

On the layers window define labels: press the last icon. Select 1. label field, choose ID (ordinal number field).
You will see the ordinal number near the points.

Make a new polygon feature on background, select edit layer - you can draw new polygon based on your points.

(Unfortunatelly, the automatic - ID based polygon-builder feature is not implemented yet.)
